The Frightening JL Wrangler Death Wobble

The Frightening JL Wrangler Death Wobble

The JL Wrangler has a vibration that violently shakes the driver and passengers is so frightening that those who have experienced it or investigated it have branded it the “JL Wrangler Death Wobble.” To date, there is no specific cure, but here is what we know.

The Death Wobble

The Death Wobble is a perceived safety concern of the JL Wrangler. The steering wheel and the entire front end shake uncontrollably, terrifying the people inside. Unlike other common shaking which happens to other vehicles from time to time, it appears random. There is no certain speed where it happens.

The actual cause of this shaking has eluded auto mechanics and investigators. When it happens, it could be related to a wide variety of problems. Sometimes the Wrangler in question has one or more of these problems at the time of this violent wobble.

  • Track bar is worn or loose
  • Worn ball joints
  • Loose or worn tie rod ends
  • Steering damper is problematic
  • Wheels are out of alignment
  • Control arm bushings need replacement
  • Frame welding is deficient
  • Loose suspension or steering bolts

Some Jeep owners have replaced the steering stabilizer, however this ends up being only a temporary solution. The Death Wobble returns shortly afterward. But it can serve as a temporary fix while you’re trying to figure out the true cause.

Mechanic Warns about a Grand Cherokee Nightmare

Mechanic Warns about a Grand Cherokee Nightmare

In extreme frustration, Brandon (@mopartechbrando on TikTok) took to TikTok to let others know about what should have been a minor repair on the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee but was SO not. Millions of followers watched. Here’s what was going on.

How It Began

Brandon, an auto mechanic on Tik Tok, expressed his frustration on his TikTok while attempting to chase down an intermittent start issue with a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. With any other vehicle this might have been a quick repair and send the customer on his way. But not this time.

Diagnose and Repair

He started with inspecting the wire near the firewall to figure out why the electrical system was not working properly. But surprise! The faulty wire could NOT be accessed because the HVAC box was blocking it. He had no choice but the remove the dashboard so he could get to the wire.

On his mission, he noticed someone or someones had been in there previously and did not fix the problem, but they replaced several parts in an effort to fix it.

So, what was the problem? He found there was a loose contact point that need to be repaired. He fixed it and the resolved the issue. Except for the fact he needed to put the car back together. What should have been a quick repair turned out taking numerous hours due to the extremely poor design of the vehicle.

“This is why auto technicians are leaving the industry,” he said. He also lamented on the many electrical problems with the 2024 Grand Cherokee, some falling under lemon laws. But if you own this vehicle, expect a far higher cost for repair due to the numerous hours of labor required to get to the wiring due to the design. And he was compensated for only four hours for the warranty work.

His TikTok story garnered over 2 million views and he received 7200+ comments. Many of the comments agreed about the electrical issues. They’ve experienced them.

Brandon warns you should think about this before buying one of these vehicles.

Temperature Blend/Recirculation Doors May Fail and Cause AC Problems on Jeep Grand Cherokee

Temperature Blend/Recirculation Doors May Fail and Cause AC Problems on Jeep Grand Cherokee

While the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been one of the most desirable SUVs for over two decades, it has not been without issues particular to the model.

For example, the failure of the temperature blend and recirculation doors has plagued hundreds of owners. When this problem occurs, the AC modes may fail to change, and there may be different temperatures on the left and right sides. This causes discomfort for passengers.

What Causes the Problem?

For starters, how common is the problem?

According to reports, the issue affects 21 Jeep Grand Cherokee model years, including 1994, 1997, 1998, and 1999. The average mileage of affected vehicles is 104,958, with a range of 18 to 272,666 miles.

So, what really happens?

The problem comes from the failure of the temperature blend and recirculation doors, which are responsible for regulating the temperature and airflow in the cabin.

When these doors fail, they can cause the AC modes not to change or the temperature to be different on the left and right sides. This can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience for passengers, especially during the hot summer months.

So, what can you do?

Fortunately, there are solutions available for owners of affected Jeep Grand Cherokees.

New heating, ventilation, and AC (HVAC) sub-assemblies are available that improve reliability. These sub-assemblies include new blend air doors, recirculation doors, door links, and sub-assembly housings.
