A small drip under your vehicle might seem harmless but ignoring it is a quick way to turn a minor maintenance issue into a catastrophic engine repair. Automotive fluids are the lifeblood of your car’s critical systems. If they’re leaking those systems are compromised. The key is knowing what you’re looking at—color and consistency are your primary clues.
The Big Three: Oil, Coolant and Brake Fluid
If you spot a leak your first priority should be identifying these three. If it’s motor oil it’ll be thick, brown or black and located near the front or middle of the engine. A slow oil leak can eventually lead to engine failure due to overheating or excessive friction.
Coolant or antifreeze is usually bright green, pink, or yellow and has a distinctly sweet smell. Coolant loss will quickly cause your engine to overheat, warping the block or cracking the cylinder head.
Finally, brake fluid is clear or brownish, thin and oily. This one is an emergency. Any loss of brake fluid means your braking system is compromised. You should have it towed before driving it any farther.
Transmission and Power Steering
Transmission Fluid is typically red or reddish-brown and feels slick. It would be found under the middle of the vehicle. This leak can indicate a failing transmission seal or pan gasket. Loss of this fluid means internal components aren’t being lubricated or cooled which will lead to failure.
Power Steering Fluid can be thin and clear, amber, or sometimes reddish. While less critical than brake fluid, a power steering leak will make your steering stiff, difficult to control and can quickly burn out the power steering pump.
