When you buy tires, they have a certain life they should get. They are advertised by how many miles they should last. You figure you’ll possibly go ten years, if you drive only occasionally.
But why did your mechanic say it’s time to replace those tires?
It seems too soon! Maybe you have driven only 40,000 miles on those 60,000 mile tires. What’s up with that?!
How Tires Wear Out Quickly
There are a good many things that can wear out your tires, even here in California. We don’t see much snow or road salt, no desert heat, so we expect to possibly even exceed the estimated tire life.
But there are times, that is not to be.
Here are some reasons tires wear out quickly:
Heat!
Tires can wear quickly with all that fabulous California sunshine and exposure to the sea moisture on the coast. Even the warmer coastal area of the San Francisco area can age your tires. Driving near a wildfire can also do serious damage.
Sitting for Long Periods of Time
If you do a lot of traveling, your car is not moving. A car that is parked for weeks or months can develop flat spots. This can cause a bumpy ride and uneven wear. Flat spotting tires are dangerous to use on a car.
Under-inflated or Over-inflated Tires
The correct tire pressure is vitally important. If you guess at the tire pressure and just add some air instead of looking in the doorjamb of the car for the correct pressure, you’re creating a problem.
Alignment or Tire Balance Problems
If you notice shaking in your wheel at certain speeds or feel like you’re not in complete control of your vehicle. Bring it in for a check.
